Behind the Scenes
All of the locations featured in the book are real places in Merida, Mexico! The backgrounds of the book are based on real-life photos taken by Luna and her mom. Let's explore them below!
When Luna first arrives in Merida, she is pictured walking by the beautiful “Hotel Merida” on Calle 60
Next, she heads to “Taqueria la Lupita” which is a famous Taqueria (taco shop) in the Santiago Neighborhood and was even featured on the Netflix Series “Taco Chronicles." We didn't have a great picture, but loved this picture of a market stall in Santa Ana Park so this is what is featured in the book and the "real" Taqueria la Lupita is featured to the right!
Here she is pictured at “Hacienda Teya” restaurant on Calle 60.
Hacienda Teya is a historic ranch located just outside of Mérida, Yucatán. Founded in 1683, it's one of the oldest haciendas in the region. Today, Hacienda Teya has been transformed into a charming restaurant and boutique hotel and the location pictures with the hats is their restaurant on Calle 60 where we love to go for Cochinita, Sopa de Lima, and jazz music!
Luna trots over to Plaza Grande which is the main “square” or center in Merida. Here she finds El Catedral de San Ildefonso, or the “Merida Cathedral” which is one of the oldest Cathedrals in North America!

The Monumento a la Patria is a prominent landmark in Mérida, Yucatán, symbolizing the city's rich history and cultural heritage. This monument features a towering column adorned with sculptures representing the country's founding fathers and significant historical events.
Paseo de Montejo is one of the most famous streets in Mérida. Known for its elegant architecture and vibrant atmosphere, it was constructed in the 19th century and is lined with impressive mansions and buildings, showcasing the city's wealth and colonial heritage. The building pictured is the Palacio de Canton, a stunning mansion built in the French Second Empire style. Today, the Palacio de Canton houses the Museo de Antropología e Historia de Yucatán, a museum dedicated to the state's history and culture. Paseo de Montejo is home to numerous shops, boutiques, restaurants, and often hosts festivals, parades, and other events throughout the year.

Here, Luna meets “Maya” the iguana (Iguanas can be found all over the city!) and she is sitting by a pair of chairs. These iconic "Sillas Tú y Yo" or "Lovers Chairs" are made of wrought iron and are a common sight throughout the city, particularly in the historic center.

Next, Maya and Luna journey north of the city to explore the Mayan World History Museum. This fascinating museum showcases the rich history and culture of the ancient Maya civilization. Visitors can learn about their complex society, astronomical knowledge, and impressive architectural achievements through interactive exhibits and artifacts.
Here, Luna is pictured at Merida’s “Slow Food Market”which is a vibrant hub of local, artisanal, and organic food products. This market, a part of the global Slow Food movement, is committed to preserving traditional cooking methods and supporting local farmers and producers.
In the final scenes, Luna and Maya the Iguana meet up with their new friends in Parque Santa Ana where local markets are held and traditional Yucatecan dances are performed. The hanging colorful flags are a regular sight in the city of Merida around festivals and special events.
